The basic problem is that the bell housing is too confined and not ventilated well enough to dissipate the heat. The Superformance is using a Quick Time bell housing that has much more ventilation than the DeTomaso Bell housing. Just another reason not to run those Plugs that some vendors offer, that close off the inspection hole at the left hand top of the bell housing. That is the only heat dissipation vent there is. Rob, If I'm not mistaken, IPSCO sells a kit that modifies Kirk's kit. It eliminates the "fitted", non-adjustable belt and makes it adjustable. It sure makes installation a lot easier. It's not listed on IPSCO's web site so you have to call or e-mail to get details. Cullen, 2511 came equipped with one of those from Dennis when I purchased it in 2002. Since then I have rebuilt the unit twice (three?) and most recently did so using what I believe to be their current offering. I spoke with and ordered directly from McLeod. My opinion, in brief, is a very simple "NO!!" The current offering was shipped to me with an incorrect input snout spacer (I solved that by using the old spacer which luckily I still had on hand), and the stainless steel input line, due to its 90° fitting where one should have used a 45° fitting, twisted itself, unseen of course, within the bell housing when it was connected to the hard line attached to the chassis rails. Even stainless steel lines don't hold up very long against grinding by a pressure plate. The stainless steel bleed line is about 4 inches too long, sticking outside the bell housing in a terrible display of ugly. Finally, my last experience started with me ordering the same rebuild kit I had previously used, using the same number off of the previous invoice. What I received from them was the rebuild kit for the current unit which uses an entirely different set of all rings. I ultimately determined that for all three generations of their hydraulic bearing McLeod has used exactly the same rebuild kit part number. They added no suffix such as a – A or a –B which to me seems indicative of a problem within the company. No, they no longer support a rebuild kit for the first two generations. While you have some experience in using one of these previously, the task of establishing proper free play and clearances is quite exacting and unforgiving. If you get it wrong there is nothing left to do but pull the transaxle and start all over again. The unit I have is now adjusted for the factory shortcomings and as has been my experience for over 50,000 miles, the system works just fine. Dennis however no longer recommends their installation and based on my experience I would not encourage any other owners to venture down that road for themselves. There-in lies one of my problems - I could never MAKE a shroud. I wish I could - maybe out of foil-wrap. Dear Mike and Scott, I remember Keith well. Decades ago, we rented out the Hallett road course for a private day of boy racing. Keith showed up in a civilian vehicle followed by a large two axle truck pulling a trailer. His two helpers proceeded to pull out the ex Indy racer with the small block Chevy engine built by a dirt track racing engine guy. I watch in amazement and fascination as they performed all of the tasks required to make the race car ready to start! During this time Keith discussed all the trials and tribulations of converting from a full on Indy engine to a methanol SBC and subsequent painful learning lessons at earlier track events. Finally after about an hour, the racecar was ready. We had a handful of cars. Keith went out and blasted around the track for about fifteen or twenty minutes and came back in. When he got out of the car, I asked him how it went. Keith replied, " Great. We completed the whole session without breaking down and it didn't catch fire once!" That is one of my all time favorite quotes and my long time benchmark for any track event!! It is hard to believe that he is gone.
