Dear Larry,
Dumb question: is your brace system available individually
or only as a package?

On September 8, 1966 at 8:30 pm ET, a new series premiered on the NBC television network. Neither the network nor the studio had any confidence in it and Variety panned it as "an incredible and dreary mess of confusion and complexities." Never a ratings hit, it barely ran three seasons before cancellation, yet this unsuccessful show called Star Trek went on to become a cultural phenomenon whose influence continues to reverberate half a century later, not only in entertainment, but in its impact on science and technology.

>>>Well, it may be stiffer than your other European cars, but without
knowing what they are, that's not saying much. 1950s British roadsters, for
instance, are no standard to judge against in this department. :>)
The front of the Pantera is fairly rigid, but the rear is extremely
flexible. Try jacking a front corner off the ground and see how well the doors,
or the decklid open.
The four-part chassis stiffening kit addresses this fundamental weakness
with the piece that replaces the stock engine bay camber bar. The wide open
engine bay is rather like a square cardboard box with the top and bottom
open, laid on its side. Push on a corner and it just folds flat. As long as
the stock bar (or equivalent to include the adjustable kind) is the only
thing there, nothing will prevent this effect from happening. The Hall and
Byars kit piece consists of an upper and lower bar, tied together in a
parallogram manner. (I'm only talking about the top part of their kit, not the
lower part). As long as the top part is affixed in all four places, it will
do a tremendous job of stiffening the rear of the car.
http://www.precisionproformance.com/pics/rigid4.jpg
The other three parts of the kit are arguably much less important, but you
can't just buy the one you want/need; you have to buy the whole kit.
The front half of my kit is still in the box, gathering dust....

Dear Kjeld,
I just spoke with Crystal at the number you gave me.
She was very helpful. She finally found that the big Copart computer
list did show TWO Panteras! However......both Panteras were bought
back by their owners!!! No longer for sale! So, the dream of a very
inexpensive and slighty damp and stinky Pantera is dead. Sigh.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Received the mechanical gauge from Mike Drew today (thanks Mike). Put it on and started the motor, and it reads 60 lbs. at start and warm up at 1500 RPM’s, not much less at idle (~900 when the choke lets go(, and only a little more when I rev. That doesn’t seem right. I would expect it to drop pretty low at idle.
Thoughts?

Know it well, the zip code is 78154. It's right outside San Antonio and next to Randolph AFB, where I was stationed for most of my Air Force Reserve career. About 60 miles from my house in Austin. I'm sure Michael Frazier knows him.

Mike, I obviously can't tell what your problem is from here, but mine did

Received the mechanical gauge from Mike Drew today (thanks Mike). Put
it on and started the motor, and it reads 60 lbs. at start and warm up
at 1500 RPM's, not much less at idle (~900 when the choke lets go(,
and only a little more when I rev. That doesn't seem right. I would
expect it to drop pretty low at idle.
Thoughts?

Dear Ed,
I am no expert with this topic and I suspect that Jeff Cobb knows far more about these things than I do, but the deal is that the insurance company has paid the Pantera for his claim. They now have , I think, salvage title to the Pantera. The insurance company wants to make money and/or minimize their loss on the claim so they are interested in selling it for whatever it will bring through Copart, who, I suspect, will get a cut of the action. So, IF I understand the situation the Pantera won’t be scrapped, but it will have it’s title marked SALVAGE or the Louisiana equivalent.
So, assuming that you bought the Pantera, it would be all ready to be parted out. It would be difficult to restore it and then try to sell it with a Salvage Title, AFAIK.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

As of Wednesday, State Farm -- just one of the insurers that serves car
owners in the area
-- had received
almost 18,000 auto claims related to flooding.
That number was more than double the number of homeowner claims the
company had received, spokesman
Roszell Gadsen said.
With such a large volume, towing companies have been stretched to the
limit.
aWeave been working around the clock,a said Ronnie
Stewart,
of Stewartas Towing in
Livingston Parish.
aItas been hectic and crazy,a Stewart said. He estimated that his
company, a small one with four
trucks, had towed more than
300 cars since the waters receded.
There were still plenty more left to be towed.
aWe probably havenat put a dent in all the cars thatas flooded,a he
said.
In East Baton Rouge Parish, the woman who answered the phone at
Roadrunner Towing said there were
no words to describe how busy it had been. Roadrunner, which has
contracts with several local police
agencies, had towed more than 700 vehicles by midweek.
Most of the cars are being taken to private towers' yards or large auto
salvage yards like Insurance Auto
Auctions in Livingston or Copart in Greenwell Springs.
Jeanene OaBrien, of Insurance Auto Auctions, said the company is
handling athousands of cars per day.a
A caras trip to one of these yards will be the first leg of its journey
to the compactor or the junkyard.
When a flood-damaged car arrives at Insurance Auto Auctionsa yard in
Livingston,
for example, the vehicle identification number is
registered with both
the
National Insurance Crime Bureau and the National Motor
Vehicle Title Information System.

The state's Office of Motor Vehicles also will issue a certificate of
destruction for any
car that is
totaled because of a gubernatorially declared disaster. The certificate
is reported to those
same national databases as a "fatal brand," or one that should prevent
the car from being sold for
anything besides parts or scrap.
Insurance Auto Auctions sells only to licensed dealers, scrappers or
dismantlers, OaBrien
said. Members of the
public cannot purchase cars from the company's lots in Louisiana.
The process has improved since Hurricane Katrina, when thousands of
destroyed cars remained
under highway overpasses for months, said Jill Jarreau, of the OMV.

The Louisiana Department of Insurance has issued a reminder to
insurance companies regarding the Certificate of Destruction title
requirements for flooded vehicles.
The department issued the bulletin following the federal declaration of
disaster due to the recent [18]massive flooding in Southeast
Louisiana.
A Certificate of Destruction is a type of title for water damaged
vehicle that has been declared a total loss.
The department said that when, as a result of an insurance settlement,
a motor vehicle is determined to be a total loss due to water damage,
Louisiana law requires the insurance company acquiring ownership of the
vehicle to send the certificate of title to the Office of Motor
Vehicles along with an application for a Certificate of Destruction.
The certificate and application must be sent to the OMV within 30 days
from the settlement of the claim.

Dear Forum,
An insurance adjustor friend of a Pantera friend

him that this Pantera is flooded and has been totaled and is
available
with a salvage title in Baton Rouge.
It appears to be pretty stock. One picture I did
not
include shows the tub with a space saver spare plus the red inflator.
The pictures seem to show a high water mark above the window sills.
It seems that this car is *supposed* to be available
for online auction through: [1]http://www.copart.com I have tried
searching for it three times and can't find it on their site although
there are lots of flood damaged and other cars there, i.e. Ferraris
and
Maseratis, etc, in small numbers.
Supposedly the value on the car was said to be
"$10,000". However, all the cars on the site are up for bid with a
few "drivers" also available for a "buy it now" price. Finally, it
seems that you have to register and pay a fee before you can bid.
However, if you're keen for a "deal", then perhaps
calling the Baton Rouge Copart salvage yard might be advantageous.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Dear Ed,
I am no expert with this topic and I suspect that
Jeff Cobb knows far more about these things than I do, but the deal is
that the insurance company has paid the Pantera for his claim. They
now have , I think, salvage title to the Pantera. The insurance
company wants to make money and/or minimize their loss on the claim so
they are interested in selling it for whatever it will bring through
Copart, who, I suspect, will get a cut of the action. So, IF I
understand the situation the Pantera won't be scrapped, but it will
have it's title marked SALVAGE or the Louisiana equivalent.
So, assuming that you bought the Pantera, it would be
all ready to be parted out. It would be difficult to restore it and
then try to sell it with a Salvage Title, AFAIK.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

So they scrap cars even if they are classics?
That is criminal if they scrap that Pantera.

-------------------------Newspaper article--------9/1/16-------------
As of Wednesday, State Farm -- just one of the insurers that serves car
owners in the area

Dear Forum,
An insurance adjustor friend of a Pantera friend
told
him that this Pantera is flooded and has been totaled and is
available
with a salvage title in Baton Rouge.
It appears to be pretty stock. One picture I did
not
include shows the tub with a space saver spare plus the red inflator.
The pictures seem to show a high water mark above the window sills.
It seems that this car is *supposed* to be available
for online auction through: [1][3]http://www.copart.com I have tried
searching for it three times and can't find it on their site although
there are lots of flood damaged and other cars there, i.e. Ferraris
and
Maseratis, etc, in small numbers.

Dear Kjeld,
I was told by my friend that the flooded Pantera is *supposed* to
be listed through a big salvage auction company: Copart
www.copart.com
What I was told is the car is in or near Baton Rouge,Louisiana,
but I do not know for sure. I will forward you the pictures sent to me. I
tried twice to find the car listed on the Copart website, but without luck.
My suggestion would be to call the people tomorrow and see if actual human
to human telephone communication can determine if they do have the flooded
Pantera for sale or not. If they do, then it will very likely be for sale
by on line auction. That is all that I know. Good luck.
Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

bracing in the front trunk isn't my first choice in brace points. There's a
couple other "elephants in the room" so to speak. I've had some good
conversations with Goran Malmberg about his testing of torsional stiffness
and tend to agree with his test results. I have Larry's bracing. There's
two other really good locations to brace besides what Larry has:
>
> 1. The rear upper cross brace is useless and is a hinge where it needs to
be stiff. There is significant twisting there. The Precision Proformance
brace there helps.
> 2. The interior of the car twists the most. Rocker strengthening or full
roll cage would help if done right but I would only do a roll cage in a race
car where a helmet is worn. Also, to brace it right, the passenger seat
would be useless.

The auction description lists the car as having 16 inch front wheels and 17 inch rear wheels. One of the photos shows the tire to be a Pirelli P7.
