What you described sounded like a fuel supply issue, so it could have been a stuck float.

Before I tried to change the hard to reach gas filter, I changed my air
filter. It was discolored but not dirty with no crap in the folds of
the filter. With the air cleaners Hillborn style scoop cover off, I
took car for a ride. Ran great! Caveat--It was very cool 65 out not
85 like the day I was having issues. I also taped the carb float
bowls with ratchet handle recommended by someone on the forum. (Stuck
float) Could a dirty air filter make the car run hot and stumble when
accelerating? Cause the idle to increase? Car runs great, I hope it
runs this good when its 85 again! Thoughts?

The '73-up fuel gauge sender is specific to the stock Pantera
fuel
tank so only Pantera vendors carry them. Wilkinson and Larry Stock
both
have them in-stock. Other vendors buy theirs from those two. Not
sure
about pricing- not the type of thing you buy very often but they're
listed
on their web sites. Yes- you DO need to remove the window and frame
for
fuel tank access. But since its not bolted in, its not much trouble
to just
pull it out.
If you install the big 'elephant-ear' air scoops on the rear side
window, and actually go fast enough for them to reverse the
natural
air flow outward (around150mph) you may find the scoops pull the
whole
window & frame out of the car at speed! This has happened at
Silver
State events. Many of us pull the window and frame once, remove
the
glass and put only the chrome frame back. No effect on speed and
from
10 ft away it looks stock. Also makes cleaning the back window
much
easier.
Occasionally, a Pantera has its cosmetic 'gills' overlapping the
window frame and the gills are bolted in with studs and wing-nuts
that are
semi-hidden.But you'll find all three if only by feel.

Folks,
First-Thanks for all the quick and helpful feedback on my
issue.
Since most information centers around "Fuel" and not timing ,
I'm
going
to replace my fancy Edelbrock Billet aluminum filter with
another
same
filter unless you recommend another filter. My filter is very
hard
to
get to behind the carb so I'd like to do it once. (I may have
to
cut
the fuel line to get it off the fittings)!
I also understand the recommendation to remove the fuel gauge
sender
mechanism and replace with a 73 unit. Removing the side window
is
required? Best place to get the 73 unit?
Also-Sounds like there is a "sock" in bottom of tank that clogs
up,
I
do have concerns with "Ripping" it out with a fish hook!
(ok--I
added
the funny part about a fish hook!) How do you fish the remains
out
if
its in pieces from trying to rip it out? Sounds like these
fragments
will clog the new filter right up if u miss a piece!

Sounds like the thing is temporarily going lean for some
reason.
One
problem well known in the Pantera world is the '71-72 cars
having
a
welded interior fuel-out line in the tank. Old cars that sit
with
gas
in them often get rust perforation of this non-replaceable
steel
fuel
line from water in old gas. That means that when the fuel
level
drops
below the rust pit(s), the fuel pump sucks air plus gas,
resulting
in
fuel starvation. If thats the problem, the fix is to replace
the
early
fuel gauge sender with the available '73-up sender. Which has
a
new
fuel feed line built into it. It is a bolt-in replacement.
Plus, on the bottom of the early in-tank line is a nylon
'sock'
used
as
a fuel filter. This builds up varnish and drastically cuts
fuel
flow.
This one is repairable: you pull the left side window for
tank
access
(the glass & frame only pushes in place) and remove the fuel
sender.
Then reach into the tank thru the window & sender hole with
some
sort
of non-sparking 3-ft-long rod and rip the nylon sock off the
bottom
of
the welded line. Fish the remains out and you're done. Cheap
but
time-consuming. Good luck-

Folks,
The vehicle:
1972 stock Pantera with Demon carb, Blaster ignition coil
Rarely driven car -maybe 1000 miles a year
The Owner:
(Average mechanic skills, I did install intake manifold,
stainless
brake lines, Fluidyne aluminum radiator , plugs, Demon
carb,
etc
when
I
bought car over 20 years ago)
I never touched a distributor!
The scenerio:
Took a really nice ride out east of Long Island to wineries
with
club
last Saturday. Full full tank of gas, oil level fine, car
ran
well.
All of a sudden on acceleration from a stop light the car
stumbles
a
bit, loss of power, then rides great after it gets past a
certain
point. Car runs fine at speed, stumbled occasionally a few
more
times
on acceleration as trip went on. I also noticed a higher
idle
than
normal. (Temp a bit higher than normal as well, thought
maybe
cause
idle was too high) (One time I had dieseling after shut
off).
The
guys asked how long since I changed my points and I said I
never
did.
They recommended removing the bulkhead and checking the
timing
and
looking at the points and possible stuck float bulb in
carb.
(I'll
change my belts when bulkhead is off as well)
Then the conversation went to changing to electronic
ignition,
set
em
n
forget em.
The Ask:
* Any other suggestions on what issue may be?
* Thoughts on electronic ignition and/or what brand
electronic
ignition you all recommend
* Any thing to look at with carb?
