Larry,

The steel core of the adapter Jack mentioned is designed to be welded to the splined steering shaft, not the wheel hub. So the stock wheel is left unharmed but the shaft is modified, and perhaps ruined in the process (that is, the modification may prove to be irreversible).

You have clearly researched this issue more than anybody. Are there any easy solutions currently available, as far as you know? I only know what was, not what is…..
