[DeTomaso] aluminum head removal update, maybe

Smokey Yunick used to say that you could minimize stud alignment problems by coating the stud threads with epoxy, then screw the studs in finger tight, add heads and torque the stud nuts to specs. This pulls the studs straight and when the epoxy cures, holds the stud straight- assuming the stud surface of the head was parallel to the block deck surface to begin with. Pulling the studs afterward was not addressed and I think the heads in quetion were cast iron which is stiffer

On a similar vein. . .
The practice for bottoming studs on heavy equipment was to put in a "soft" disk so the stud end would not compress on the casing bottom. This helps keep more threads in tension and reduces the break away friction when removing.
Would that be an engine builder's practice also?

Dan,
Is this difficulty in pulling the heads common when head studs are used or is there another factor? Should some anti-seize product be applied to the studs?
Ken
