I too walked around that room with Tom while he commented on the cars.  He told me he very much enjoyed the modifications—except for one.  He did not like changes to the “haunches” or shoulders of the car, for example the elephant ear scoops or any other substantial changes to the grille area.  He said that was the focal point of his design because the powerful V8 is what set the Pantera apart from its purely Italian counterparts.

I don’t know for sure, but I understood his comments about starting from scratch had more to do with continuing production of the car, not modifications to existing cars.

With said, I personally prefer original looking cars.  My ’74 U.S. GTS has most of the usual modifications, but I’ve kept the appearance, with the exception of it being lowered with adjustable Koni’s and new springs, original adding only parts that were available in Europe (small front and read deck lid “sugar scoop” spoilers).
