[DeTomaso] One overlooked Pantera sale

Agreed, as a *nearly* universal rule.
However, when we sold our 1963.5 Galaxie Stock car on Bring a Trailer, we
truly sold a race-ready car. That is just how we are. The owner has now
attended 3 races with only nut and bolt work before the last two events.
He called and us and told us it was the first time that he bought a
supposedly race-ready car that was, indeed, race-ready. He was in mid-70's
with 50+ years of racing.
Also, we recently purchased (in May) a 2007 Norma prototype that was sold
as "race ready." We, like you, asked the right questions. And, we did not
expect it to in fact be race-ready. I was able to inspect the car before I
bought it, and the owner had full records, a beautiful race shop, and the
car was so perfectly prepared you could eat off it. It fired right up, he
had compression readings, etc. I also had spoken to the prep shop (well
known out of Sears Point) about the car, and they said it was maintained
with no cost limit. So, I bought it, and took it home, still expecting it
would need a full race prep before we took it out. After putting it on the
lift in the shop - we were shocked: it was 100% race-ready. All the
torques, fluids, battery charged, etc. I mean down to the smallest
nut/bolt that needed safety wire was done. We took it out for our first
event and had no issues. I called the seller and told them it was the
first time in 35 years of racing that I purchased a supposedly race-ready
car that was in fact, race-ready. I almost felt like writing him a check
for a few thousand more...
Anyway, I think there are venues where you can still get a good deal. Our
buyer bought the Galaxy (on Bring A Trailer -
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1963-ford-galaxie-500-13/) because
numerous people knew us and our cars/prep level and many that saw the
Galaxie actually race made great comments. We, like the Norma, had
records, videos, results, etc.
Rarely does any of the above happen at an auction. In fact, I would say
never. It is almost like the car is at the auction to put an intentionally
ignorant middle man between the buyers and the seller. "If you have a car
that needs work - sell it an auction."
Regards,
Steven G. Lisa, Esq.

Our worst purchase was a "race-ready," "Ez-wider" ex-Howdy Holmes, Lola
T324 Formula Super Vee.A We could tell it wasn't race-ready, but not
being able to drive it and with no recent videos, we were left with our
visual inspection at the auction.A The engine alone was worth $9K, and
we were able to verify that it was indeed "the" ex-Howdy Holmes SV that
been modified to run in Formula Atlantic later in the 70's.A All the
parts were there, and it drove on to the auction block.A We decided to
bid on it, since we were doing more vintage racing and it would be a
good class/car for Tony to drive - plus it would easily fit in our rig
as a 3rd car to take to the races.A
Bidding stalled with us as high bidder at $15,000, and then right
before the hammer dropped, some drunk fool decided to jump in and
outbid us, and another impaired fool (me) decided I wasn't goingA to
let that happen.A We ended at $26,000, and with auction fees/taxes, it
cost me over $30,000 to buy that car.A We got it back to the race
shop, and the tub was a disaster.A It had not been drilled out,
bonded, and riveted in decades - but in fact all the parts were there
and the engine ran well.A Many hours of work later, we had the tub
apart, but, we are a very very long way from having it done.A A
Anyway, when we are finally - years from now -- completely done
restoring the car and get a few races under its belt, it may be worth
$25,000, if we are lucky.A Our investment will be well north of
$50,000, not including shop labor.
That result is not the end of the world, but it will be the last car we
buy at one of the "Scottsdale Auctions" -- which is a shame, because we
like the events and car watching, but have a history of getting caught
up in the moment.A So, I just have to stay away.A A
