IIRC the ballast resister is bypassed in the start circuit and then in the circuit in the run mode. So if resister was open or bad connections the engine could try to run in the start mode and die in the run mode.  

Bud #3400 ( Drive it like there is no tomorrow -- for there may not be ! )

I immediately thought of that too. But in the scenario you describe, the car will initially start and momentarily run until the key is released from the spring-loaded start position. Mike didn’t indicate that there was so much as a pop of combustion. In that case, if it was the switch, it would be both wires that failed at the same time which is unlikely?
