[DeTomaso] Tires 225/50/15-Help please

I looked at it differently. Since I only drive the car sparingly (weekend cruises, Cars & Coffee, occasional club track events at COTA, etc.) I decided not to worry about the high wear rate and get tires that are safe, reliable at speed, and grip like race tires. The Avons. I’ve not replaced my fronts with Avons yet because they have good tread on them, but did put 285/50-15s on the rear. Huge difference from the 305/50-15 BFG Euro T/A’s they replaced on my 10 inch Campys. The grip is far better and the ride even seems better. Granted, the BFGs don’t wear so they were getting real old, but still never performed like the Avons do. I don’t worry about losing the rear end anymore, at least not at the speeds I used to take through them with the BFGs.

I bought the Avons from Roger Kraus Racing Tires. A couple of guys that work there have Panteras with the Avons. Roger told me to put 3M film behind the rear wheels on the valance (rocker) because these tires are so sticky they will throw stuff like race tires do. I ran the film from the seam where the fender joins the valance around to the midpoint of the muffler cans. I have a U.S. GTS so my car is black down there and the film is invisible.

As soon as my fronts are worn I will replace them with Avons as well. They are a little taller and narrower than my current 225/50-15s so I’ll have to adjust my suspension and have the car realigned, but it will be worth it. Fortunately, I have adjustable Konis.

I also looked into Goodyears and Dunlops, but I think the Cobra and GT40 guys got it right with these tires.
