Mark,
After buying cars off of Ebay, Hemmings, Craigslist, RaceCar Direct,
RacDezrt and the Scottsdale car auctions, I personally have come to the
conclusion that BAT is becoming the place to go to sell (or maybe even
buy!) a good car. I have no direct experience yet buying or selling on
BAT, but have friends who have done so and have watched with a silent
addiction every morning. In contrast, the other "options" left me surprised
in some important ways and in some cases paying premiums for that surprise
when I ended up with the car.
Of course, I could blame the glasses of wine before hitting "bid," but I
have on occasional been quite rational, had PPI's done, spent the money on
airfare to go look at a car, and walked away due to fairly obvious problems
missed or underestimated by the inspector (and of course left unstated in
the advert/listing). I now go so far as to request (and pay for)
compression and leak down tests -- as I did recently on a Pantera that was
for sale). But, I think that "unknown" on the "silent sale" sites keeps
the price unfairly low for the exception -- the really good cars well known
to an educated group.
This forum can help solve the "unknown" if members are willing to talk
*honestly* on BAT about the well-known Pantera's. For an uncommon car like
a Pantera, known to a focused group of Pantera experts, I think BAT should
work for a good car -- but clearly won't work for a Pantera with problems.
This group would be all over it. However, it would not take long for
people to get to know that a car listed on BAT that is favorably and
frequently commented upon by experts is a "good" Pantera to buy.
Anyway - just my thoughts.
Regards,
Steven G. Lisa, Esq.
