All good advice from Steve;

BaT has a strong following, although as a personal gripe I do miss the old BaT journalistic barn find side that seems to have given way to a pure auction site. There's a lot of side banter comments on auctions by folks who often don't have clue what they are talking about and moreover no intention of bidding, but if you have thick skin and can get past that I think it's become one of the top venues. However like most auction sites BaT has no assurances and relies solely on the sellers description. From a buyer perspective your credit card is billed the 5% buyers fee a auction close and you consummate the deal and payment directly with the seller.

As much as I hate the site and their philosophy I usually advocate for eBay, but as cars are free to list and $125 if it sells it's about the cheapest exposure to the widest audience. There's an awful lot that gets listed for that exposure as a dragnet and sells outside eBay or after the auction ends. Some would argue (mostly eBay) that dealing outside the site loses buyer protections, but in reality eBay policies are to protect eBay not the consumer. In any transaction these days and with the prevalence of scams both buyer and seller need to be very diligent and I personally take far more caution than I used to in the past.

Hemmings I like for the online advertising, I would not bother with the print version if it's an extra cost but suspect it still comes free with a general online ad), they used to run online ads until sold.

Personally I liken the major auction houses to Casino's, it's a roll of the dice and the house always wins (on both sides o the deal in this case)!

Then there's Craigslist, that 's more like walking into the casino and dropping all your worldly possessions on the Roulette table on green!

Mark,

After buying cars off of Ebay, Hemmings, Craigslist, RaceCar Direct,
RacDezrt and the Scottsdale car auctions, I personally have come to the
conclusion that BAT is becoming the place to go to sell (or maybe even
buy!) a good car. I have no direct experience yet buying or selling on
BAT, but have friends who have done so and have watched with a silent
addiction every morning. In contrast, the other "options" left me surprised
in some important ways and in some cases paying premiums for that surprise
when I ended up with the car.

Of course, I could blame the glasses of wine before hitting "bid," but I
have on occasional been quite rational, had PPI's done, spent the money on
airfare to go look at a car, and walked away due to fairly obvious problems
missed or underestimated by the inspector (and of course left unstated in
the advert/listing). I now go so far as to request (and pay for)
compression and leak down tests -- as I did recently on a Pantera that was
for sale). But, I think that "unknown" on the "silent sale" sites keeps
the price unfairly low for the exception -- the really good cars well known
to an educated group.

This forum can help solve the "unknown" if members are willing to talk
*honestly* on BAT about the well-known Pantera's. For an uncommon car like
a Pantera, known to a focused group of Pantera experts, I think BAT should
work for a good car -- but clearly won't work for a Pantera with problems.
This group would be all over it. However, it would not take long for
people to get to know that a car listed on BAT that is favorably and
frequently commented upon by experts is a "good" Pantera to buy.

Anyway - just my thoughts.

Regards,

Steven G. Lisa, Esq.
