[DeTomaso] How much has EFI advanced over the past few years?

The Pro-M EFI uses a "wide-band" O2 Sensor that is read directly by the computer to adjust the mixture. It can also be read by a cockpit gauge or via the tuning software "dashboard" on a laptop. This dashboard can read all the engine sensors "real time" and can log them for later review. The EFI computer also controls the cooling fans based on the engine coolant sensor in the block.

Older versions of EFI's typically used a "narrow-band" O2 sensor so their ability to adjust the EFI mixture was limited.

This is a fantastic thread, gang! Like many of you, I've contemplated converting to EFI for years. I've battled the carb thing for the last 12-years, trying several Holley/Demon/QFT carbs. I was close to taking the plunge, until I met a guy who used to wrench for Gordie Johncock back in the day. Kyle said that if I left him the Pantera for a few hours, he'd go through it.

Long story made short - Kyle is a genius. He found sever things that other tuners had done 'wrong' and set everything straight. The Cleveland makes more power than it ever did before, and I went from 8mpg to nearly 13mpg. It was $250 well spent!!!

Will I ever go to EFI? Perhaps some day. But now, I'm enjoying my car more than ever before!

I installed an oxygen sensor and fuel air ratio monitor gauge in my Pantera and started tuning my carburetor using it. The car ran great and I picked up about two miles per gallon. That little trick got me comfortable with fuel injection and installed it on the new engine in my Pantera. Just to keep the guess work out of trouble shooting a problem with the system, I also installed FAST's on dash monitor. It tells you everything that is going on with the system and when there is a sensor error, it doesn't use crazy sounding codes that you have to look up. It tells you which sensor has the problem in plane English!
