As far as preparedness goes, when my children were young (and up until they moved out) we would do a home fire drill at least once per year.  The kids had been trained how to check a door for heat, indicating fire on the other side, how to stay low and use a wet rag/shirt/etc. to avoid inhaling smoke, how to get out of the house safely.  Each room upstairs has an emergency ladder that can be dropped from a window, and we had a designated meeting place at a neighbor's house.
Something to consider if you have children at home.
Praying for our brothers and sisters being impacted by the fires.
