[DeTomaso] Riding Shotgun With Michelle Rodriguez: Pantera

Geez, you guys are tough today. I thought it was a good little puff piece
on Panteras. Hey, she said it was "sexy." She drove it around and said how
much fun it was to drive, that you had to really drive it, not like most
other cars. What more do you want?

As far as the problems with Panteras she was spot on. Many of the early
model Pantera's did have over-heating problems. And, that Italian metal
rusts like there is no tomorrow. I don't even like parking next to rusty
cars for fear of a rust virus. And, yes, many Panteras just like the yellow
she drove don't have any rust - maybe because it has been restored, or maybe
because it lived in one of the Southeastern states and/or California. And,
be honest, Pantera's are rare, and getting more rare. Sure there might be a
lot at the fun rally, but otherwise in many places around the U.S., you will
never again see a Pantera, although I can't tell you how many old timers
have come up to me at a car show and said they were restoring their beloved
Pantera and had been for the last 15-20 years.

With respect to fourth gear, that's the one gear I have to really bang (very
gently of course), but it is the one gear that gives me the hardest time.

Steering - if you are used to power steering, rack & pinion on the Pantera
is "different" and requires a whole lot more effort. I had my Pantera on
the Homestead Race Track on the road track portion and boy, did I have to
work really hard in the corners and esses. The 2016 Corvette behind me had
its windows up, the a/c on and the driver had one finger on the wheel while
going through the corners (notice I didn't say "driving"), all the while I
was sawing my way through. Coming out of the corners was satisfying when I
put the pedal to the metal. But, after three or four laps, I was sweating
like a pig (even though I had a big smile on my face). The guy in the left
hand seat of the corvette was fresh as a daisy, but, I bet he didn't have as
much fun as I did.

All in all, Michelle was gracious about the Pantera, pointing out some of
the negatives, but really concentrating on the positives. It's the first
couple of videos about cars and I am sure she will stop what I think is a
rather obnoxious laugh and maybe get better at her story telling ability.
Her friend however, probably should find a new job. Otherwise, it was great
to see the Pantera get exposure.

She summed up her driving experience pretty well. She said something about
having to keep her witts about her while driving the Pantera.
Unfortunately she arrived only 50 percent armed.
Liked the photography and a Pantera always looks good on a track.
