Owen, a rattle from one rocker cover could indeed be a stuck lifter. There are lifter-cleaning products on the market that apparently work, but the problem is there's very little oil flow through the lifters. So it may be quite a while until the magic stuff gets into the lifter and even longer until it softens the varnish or whatever's causing the sticking. Depending on your patience, this may fix the noise eventually. It could also be a loose rocker arm or a bent/broken pushrod. Problem we have is, we cannot see what parts are on the motor from 6000 miles away, so I'll assume it's bone-stock. As such, there should be no adjustable parts anywhere in the valvetrain. If the rocker arm is not stamped steel but is aluminum, there are other possibilities.

Remove the rocker cover from the head that's making noise, and look for looseness in all 8 exposed rocker arms by wiggling them. Also look for missing pushrods: if one breaks or bends, that rocker arm will flop around. If everything seems to be accounted for, lay drain pans or large cloths under the side of the engine without a rocker cover, have a good shop light or strong flashlight at hand, and start it up. At idle, the amount of oil you'll lose from spillage will be minimal. and ideally you will only be running the engine at most 2 minutes or so. You can zero in on the noise while watching the action, and verify the results of the noisy area by carefully touching the errant rocker arm while the engine is running slowly. If you guessed right, the noise will change or stop as you push on one rocker arm. That tells you exactly which lifter & rocker arm on which cylinder is involved. Shut the engine off.

Try tightening the bolt holding the noisy rocker arm. If the bolt turns at all, you likely found your problem. If not, it will require parts removal and gasket replacement. Good luck- J DeRyke

Guys

help please with hydraulic lifters

I have a 1972 std pantera its got 4 dot heads and alum intake
manifold and 4 bolt mains
i rolled it over for 2 months while rust proffing it with engine still
in it
now its finished and back on road but a rattle from one head seems to
be a lifter and it is somtimes intermittent but quite loud
what advice can you give me - i never saw a hydraulic lifter as we
have all overhead cams or for old stuff all are solid lifters
how should i go about checking the exact source of the noise and
assuming it is one hydraulic lifter what do i do to repair it ??

your advice would be much appreciated

Owen, a rattle from one rocker cover could indeed be a stuck lifter.
There are lifter-cleaning products on the market that apparently work,
but the problem is there's very little oil flow through the lifters. So
it may be quite a while until the magic stuff gets into the lifter and
even longer until it softens the varnish or whatever's causing the
sticking. Depending on your patience, this may fix the noise
eventually. It could also be a loose rocker arm or a bent/broken
pushrod. Problem we have is, we cannot see what parts are on the motor
from 6000 miles away, so I'll assume it's bone-stock. As such, there
should be no adjustable parts anywhere in the valvetrain. If the rocker
arm is not stamped steel but is aluminum, there are other
   possibilities.
Remove the rocker cover from the head that's making noise, and look for
looseness in all 8 exposed rocker arms by wiggling them. Also look for
missing pushrods: if one breaks or bends, that rocker arm will flop
around. If everything seems to be accounted for, lay drain pans or
large cloths under the side of the engine without a rocker cover, have
a good shop light or strong flashlight at hand, and start it up. At
idle, the amount of oil you'll lose from spillage will be minimal. and
ideally you will only be running the engine at most 2 minutes or so.
You can zero in on the noise while watching the action, and verify the
results of the noisy area by carefully touching the errant rocker arm
while the engine is running slowly. If you guessed right, the noise
will change or stop as you push on one rocker arm. That tells you
exactly which lifter & rocker arm on which cylinder is involved. Shut
   the engine off.
Try tightening the bolt holding the noisy rocker arm. If the bolt turns
at all, you likely found your problem. If not, it will require parts
removal and gasket replacement.
