[DeTomaso] Tires for 7" Campys

Tread width and section width (which is what the "255" signifies) are two
different things and almost never equal. Section width is the maximum width
of the inflated tire, usually found half way up the sidewall. The tread
width is always narrower than the section width though by how much varies
brand to brand. Most manufacturers recommend that the section width does not
exceed the wheel rim width by more than two (2) inches or 50mm.

Just doing a little math,
the thread width of 255 would be 255/25.4 = 10"  (25.4mm per inch) the
diameter would be the thread width X aspect X 2 + rim = 10 X 0.50 X 2
+15 = 25"

Thus the 10" tread on a 7" rim would be too much, but the 25" is close to
the original 25.2"

my notes imply a 215 on the front might rub

255/50?  I know of nobody making such tires and if they did, they would be
WAY too tall. 

I'm assuming you made a typo and meant 225/50?  Those would fit perfectly.
Although they might be a bit happier on 8-inch wheels in the front, they
should work fine on 7-inch wheels.
