[DeTomaso] Help Needed! Installing ZF Today and Stuck

One more thought for this topic.
Using a plastic clutch alignment tool, I had a couple of hours worth of
failures.
Then Doh! I realized that the friggin tool was flexing.
So I hung the ZF vertically, so the clutch plate was horizontal, and got
it first try.

I know I am late to the party, but MAKE SURE the dowel pins on the
engine/ZF mounting surfaces are present. Failure to do so may cause the
ZF input shaft and the crank shaft to be on a SLIGHTLY different plane.
Yes, they will fit together, but the ever so slight alignment error
will cause premature main bearing wear.

FWIW, I have always centered my clutch disc by hand just before
   tightening
the clutch assy mounting bolts. I use my finger tips to gauge even
distance all around the perimeter relative to the clutch plate. I have
never failed to get the ZF in with this method.

   Michael,
If the clutch has not been disturbed that tool has zero function. It's
   sole
purpose is to center the clutch disc before the pressure plate bolts
   are
   tightened against the flywheel.
He said he only removed the gearbox. So the clutch is undisturbed.
The problem he's having is caused by very slight angular mismatch
   between
the engine and gearbox combined with slight rotational misalignment of
   the
input shaft relative to the clutch disc. Sometimes it takes 30 seconds
   to
slide a gearbox in place; other times it can take 30 minutes. It just
   needs
   trial and error.
I make it easier by cutting the heads off long bolts and grinding a
   taper,
then threading the bolts into the block. I then slide the bell housing
   over
the bolts so it is perfectly lined up. Then slide it forward, lift or
   lower
the tail as necessary so the input shaft starts to enter, then put the
gearbox in gear and rotate the output flanges slightly to rotate the
   input
shaft until it snicks into place.
