Here in Ca some years ago we had an additive called MTBE or something similar which was supposed to decrease emissions.
The report I heard was that police departments noted a decrease in their fuel mileage by 10%
Eventually it was shown to cause an increase in the incidence of asthma so it was dropped.

I think gasoline is a mix of Ocatane, Pentane and Hexane?A In the
graph it just lists Octane in Gasoline but I know there's a lot of
stuff in the cocktail. I can't remember all those reagents.
