Hmm? You have to be very careful about predictions. NASA predictions are based mostly on "funding."
Tax payer funding. Big difference. JPL has 24 flying missions and 10 instruments on other missions. We
no longer do one mission at at time. And we are only 1 of 10 NASA centers. Prioritizing funding for those
plus future proposed missions is difficult.
I personally have worked on 9 Mars missions (Mars Observer, Mars Global Surveyor, Odyssey, MRO,
Mars Exploration Rovers, Phoenix Lander, Mars Express & Beagle2 <ESA> and MSL) and I am working
on InSight Lander and Mars 2020 right now. It is extremely difficult to get to Mars. We have never had a "return"
mission from Mars. The Mars Sample Return mission has been killed many times due to funding constraints.
I've worked on 2 sample return missions. Genesis and Stardust. NASA has had 3 sample return missions. You
can guess what the other one was.
It is possible, but Space-X will need to start 'today' investing billions into getting to Mars (and return) robotically
and 10x that for human spaceflight. Just solving the radiation problem will be huge. The max 24 minute
One-Way Light Time (OWLT) means the crew will be mostly on their own. To get the high data rates required
for human spaceflight I would assume he intends to use our DSN Antenna's for Telecom? Building 70m antenna's
are 100 million a pop and you will need 3 sites around earth (120 deg apart) with 2 antenna's at each site.
You can do the math.
And as a privately held company what is the ROI. I personally am excited that he is going for it. We work with
vendors to build our spacecraft all the time. Lockheed, Orbital, Ball, Boeing, etc. It is mandated by Congress that
we use and fund these vendors. The ROI for taxpayers is, of course, Technology Transfer.
BTW Elon is not the only billionaire investing big $bucks in future spaceflight. James Cameron has invested in a
startup in Seattle called "Planetary Resources" which will mine asteroids.

There is no question that Elon Musk is a genius. Between his first
commercial success (a video game he made as a teen ager), to Pay pal ,
which made him a billionaire, to Tesla, Solar City, and Space -X (which I
think is the coolest by far) the guy is absolutely brilliant. His fist
Tesla roadster was made on the lotus Elise platform. His later models are
proprietary designs. There 0-60 times are impressive. The 2013 model S
sedan does 0-60 in 3.9 and the quarter mile in 12.4 sec !

His Space X rocket the Falcon 9 takes off, and the space craft (the
dragon) travels to to the international space station( by robotic control )
unloads supplies and brings back waste and experiments. It's missions so
far have been unmanned but it can fly both robotically and by pilots (in a
future version Dragon 2) The Dragon 2 space craft will eventually be able
to carry a crew of 7 who will be able to have some limited control over the
space craft. I think it's absolutely amazing that this has been
accomplished by a privately owned company ( Space -X is not publicly
traded) . Only in the U.S.A.! Tesla at a PEG of 2900 seems crazy , but
there are many tech companies that have no PEG because they have still to
operate at a profit!
So who knows but it's a little to risky for my blood. But as an individual
I think Elon Musk is a manto watch. He invested a huge portion of his own
money into Space X and has predicted they will make a manned flight to
Mars by 2026 ( that's 10 years ahead of NASA's prediction). He named his
space craft Dragon after the peter , paul, and mary song "Puff the magic
dragon" because critics said his Space -X rocket would never get off the
ground!
