Hi guys,

Here's a great video by an engine outfit in England that built a motor for
a race Pantera. I *think* it was for the yellow factory Gr4 that was
converted to Gr5 spec, although it might have been for the red Gr3 converted to
Gr4 spec (#5855). The latter car never really ran properly.

Anyway, the interesting thing about Webers is that they demand an unusually
wide LSA (lobe seperation angle) of 112-115 degrees to work properly.
This engine was probably fitted with a very radical narrow LSA cam engineered
for a big single-plane intake, which has completely different requirements.

They got a ton of power out of the engine, yes (I suspect it's a big-time
cheater stroker). But, note the effect of the narrow LSA--ungodly amounts
of reversion, and a potentially lethal cloud of fuel vapors hanging over the
mouths of the carbs. Years ago, I saw the Adler's Gr5 Pantera literally
catch on fire in the pits at the POCA Fun Rally track event, because this fuel
vapor soaked the air filters, and then it backfired on startup and set the
filters on fire. Webers have lots of fiddly brass jets that will melt at
low temperature, and it doesn't take long for an air cleaner fire to lead to a
Weber meltdown, and molten metal that runs down into the cylinders is never
a good thing.

Anyway, check it out....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRdwWgSGqvc

With Webers, wide LSA is your friend. It really smoothes the idle out and
removes much of the radical nature of a powerful engine, making the car
sound quiet and docile by comparison. But boy, will it go!

Mike

I have posted this before, but?

I ran my car with a CompCams 282S and currently with a 294S.

These are old school solid lifter cams with "mild rough idle" and "rough
idle" descriptions. I don't have the specs handy, but they are on a
106deg lobe separation and they have a lot of overlap.

My car had the usual mean Pantera idle with a Holley. When I switched to
Webers, the idle completely smoothed out. I can't imagine it getting any
smoother with a wider lobe separation, and to be honest I don't want it
smoother.

I haven't run it hard (on a dyno) to watch the reversion, but I plan on it
once I get the car together.

My point is that I disagree that a wide LSA is needed with Webers to
smooth out the idle. I am sure that it helps with reversion and may make
more power, but how much smoother can it get?

Smoothing out the idle is more to do with the individual runner intake.
There are no pulses 'fighting each other' in the plenum of the intake under the
4 bbl.

We've kinda' beat this up before?.

The LSA just optimizes the performance.

But hey? what do I know? I run wide LSA's on the Pantera and the GT40.
They both have IR intakes and EFI.

We've done this before, and I liked it then too.

67 Cougar, 289 automatic, white, very straight, rear ended by a drunk on
the 8th day of ownership
68 Mustang, 302 automatic, switched to top loader after burning up 3
automatics, used that car up
84 Mustang GT Turbo, strangely that's one I really miss, great commuter,
plus plenty of grunt for passing, traded it in on the 93 Cobra
93 Mustang Cobra, Red, Vortech, I would still have it today if the punks
wouldn't have kept stealing it.
67 Mustang Fastback, 289 then 428 2x4s, 5 speed in white/blue GT500 trim,
too loud, extremely fast
97 Mustang Cobra, hated that car, lots of power, but it felt like a Toyota

Hey you engine analysts.
I'm installing A Kevco Racing pan right now,
so I got to take an inventory of the contents of the pan and the filter.

I rebuilt this engine (377 Cleveland) last year and put 100 miles on the
break-in oil.
Everything was new or newly ground but the rings.
I kept them because there was very little mileage on the previous build,
(which I inherited along with some very special quality problems).
When I changed the break-in oil,
I got about the volume of 2 BBs in magnetic muck on the drain-plug magnet.
It wasn't very magnetic, so I'll BS-guess and say it was less than 10%
steel/iron.
I didn't recover anything when I tore the filter apart (K&N)
so it was probably just too well distributed for me to find.

Then I put 1200 miles on a fill of Royal Purple synthetic.
I got exactly the same result again with with the drain-plug and the filter.
From the pan I got about a half-dozen chips
about 0.020 x 0.020 x way thinner than I can get ahold of. Maybe 0.002
or 0.003.

This all seemed pretty OK to me.
I think the flakes were one-time sharp edges left from the machine-work.

So - am I delusional guys?
Comments please, I can take it.
dave

1950 Ford Tudor coupe, flathead V8 and 3 speed on the column.
1962 Doge Dart, straight 6, automatic pushbutton transmission, a tank that you
couldn't tear up.
1969 Open Kadete, 4 cylinder, 4 speed manual, slow as hell but you could get
twelve high school kids in it.
1970 Dodge Dart, V8, automatic.
1972 Mercury Montego, 351C, automatic. wish I still had this one.
1971 Lincoln Contenental Mark IV, 460 ford tank.

1985 Pontiac Bonneville, 8 cylinder, 3 speed auto.
1986 Chevrolet Caprice Station Wagon, V8 hydraulic brake booster.
1991 Ford E150 Custom van, 302, 3 speed with OD. Put many vacation miles on this
baby.
1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, Twin turbo V6, all wheel steering and all wheel
drive. Car was fast especially in the turns. Would be a good track car.
1972 Detomaso Pantera, 351C upgraded to a 411 IR EFI.
1996 Chevrolet Camaro. V6, auto overdrive.
1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, 302 with automatic overdrive with rack and pinion
steering.

1950 Ford Tudor coupe, flathead V8 and 3 speed on the column.
1962 Doge Dart, straight 6, automatic pushbutton transmission, a tank that you
couldn't tear up.
1969 Opal Kadete, 4 cylinder, 4 speed manual, slow as hell but you could get
twelve high school kids in it.
1970 Dodge Dart, V8, automatic.
1972 Mercury Montego, 351C, automatic. wish I still had this one.
1971 Lincoln Contenental Mark IV, 460 ford tank.
1969 Honda Civic, 4 cylinder 4 speed. Top speed of 99mph with a tail wind.
1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback, 302 with automatic overdrive with rack and pinion
steering.
2008 Hyundai Veracruz, V6 Automatic 6 speed, loaded with everything, maybe best
car I've owned.
2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP hardtop coupe, one of only 230 made like it.
2001 Pontiac Firebird, V6 Automatic overdrive, larger wheels and tires.

72 Pantera, favorite so far
01 Viper GTS ACR, Sapphire Blue

1986 Kawasaki 600 Ninja
Still own it. Let it sit for ten years due to an engine miss; later
discovered to be a bad plug wire. Got it going again, have ridden it only a
few
times in the past couple of years. Now down again for another engine
miss. Probably another plug wire.

1982 Kawasaki GPz1100.
Still own it. Bought it with 3400 miles on it in 1988, put another 90K
miles on it and flat-out wore out the engine. In fall of 1998, gave the
engine to Doug Deryke (Jack's son) for an engine rebuild that was to take 30
days. Life got in the way over there, got it back fully rebuilt seven years
later. Slid it into the frame, life got in the way over here, still waiting
to finish assembly. Hoping to get it on the road (with a checkbook) in
the next couple of months.

1972 De Tomaso Pantera
Still own it. Paid $13K for it, lost count of how much more I've invested
since, but certainly well over $50K. Value today? Priceless.

1983 Kawasaki KZ1000R Eddie Lawson Replica.
Still own it. Very rare and desirable collector's item; I spotted it
languishing outside a shack in Enid, Oklahoma, and bought it for only $1400 in
1990. It needed a full restoration although it ran great. I blew it to
pieces in 1995 and sent every black component (frame, swingarm, brackets etc.)
to be powdercoated. While the bits were there, I was handed short-notice
orders to move to Korea. Got the bits back, and with Mike DeRyke (Jack's
other son), assembled the entire bike in one day, with every fastener only
finger-tight. The idea was that I would take it all apart again and
reassemble it properly when I got back home in 1996. It is still sitting,
waiting
its turn.

1981 VW Scirocco

Still own it. Paid $350 for it in 1989, drove the snot out of it until it
blew a head gasket and got stuck in a field for an engine transplant, in
2006. Just got done investing $5000 to get it going again and got it back a
couple of weeks ago. Today it is worth $350. That is, if somebody was
feeling especially generous.

1966 Shelby GT350 clone
Still own it. Paid $10.5K for it in 1994, worked with Doug to convert to
four-wheel disc brakes, then later rebuilt the engine. Not long
afterwards, Mad Dog was riding with me when the air cleaner stud snapped and
fell into
the #8 cylinder, making Expensive Noises. Gary Roys flew out on vacation
and we rebuilt the engine again in my garage. Shipped it to England in
2004, spent two years driving it all over Europe, then shipped it to Gary in
Detroit for a six-month restoration. After the engine builder stole $6000
from me (and compared to many other people, including several Pantera guys, I
got away lucky), eventually we gave up and I paid another guy for another
engine. Seven years passed before it came home, almost exactly a year ago.
It needs about four days work to be complete. So far I have only devoted
about two hours to the task. Hoping to get it sorted shortly before or
after the Fun Rally. The only sound financial investment I've made (other
than the ELR mentioned above), as it's probably worth $40-45K now.

1966 Contemporary 427 Cobra replica
Still own it. Bought it while living in Korea in 1995. Drove it for
three days, handed the keys to Doug to look after it for me, and headed back to
Korea. I wasn't even there yet when the car fell apart from under
him--rear A-arm broke due to defective weld. Car was laid up for a couple of
years while it got sorted with no insurance involvement, as the manufacturer
took responsibility and said they would pay for all damages. A year into
negotiations I got replacement parts, I then paid to have the bodywork repaired,

and just as the paint was drying, manufacturer went bankrupt, leaving me
stuck with the repair bill. Engine never really worked as advertised; it
went to Detroit where Gary supervised its overhaul. The aforementioned engine
builder/thief was still in business and doing good work at that time, and
built a fantastic engine. Got it back home and drove it and enjoyed it for
years. A year ago, was driving in the mountains in the middle of the night
and apparently spun a bearing. Turns out it had an oil leak and the
dipstick lies. When I would pull it to check, it always showed full. After
it
blew up, it still showed full, until I turned it over, and it was dry as a
bone on the other side. Expensive lesson learned. Now sitting in a
corner, waiting its turn to get fixed. I'm hoping I can get away with turning
the crank and oversize bearings, but I'm preparing for the worst. 427 side
oiler repairs might not be cheap. The car is worth about $15-20K more than I
paid for it, but then again, I've probably spent $15K on repairs and etc.
so I'm about even on that deal.

1980 VW Scirocco GTi
Still own it. Found it abandoned at Travis AFB, and (long story short)
bought it for $35, just because I wanted the wheels. Got it home, discovered
it was (despite its horrible appearance) a pretty good car. Yanked the
seats and sold them for $400, and replaced with factory Recaro seats purchased
from the junkyard for $50. Had a used 1.8 liter engine installed, and a
few other things done, and it has been serving me well ever since, as both a
'truck' and a track-day car. Best money I ever spent in my life.

1981 VW Scirocco S
Still own it.   Helped a friend from Chicago buy this car in San Francisco;
he took it to Seattle and used it as his airport car (he lived in Chicago
but his Air Force Reserve gig was in Seattle). Somebody gave him a Volvo
850 Wagon for a dollar, and since he had three babies at the time, it was a
better car for him. He made me a deal I couldn't refuse, and it came back
here. It also got a new engine, lots of trick suspension and brake goodies,
runs like a top, fast, fun to drive.

2001 Honda XR250R
Still own it. Finally woke up to the fact that I had been riding
motorcycles since 1986 but never rode a dirt bike. Dumb. Fixed this problem
by
buying a 2001 bike with under 100 miles on it, in 2008. Originally a
dirt-only bike, I converted it to make it (barely) street-legal, just so I can
ride in places like Death Valley. Time constraints mean I only get to ride it
2-3 times a year, but those are great days.

1981 VW Scirocco S
Still own it. My original Scirocco was stuck in a field for six years
with a blown head gasket, and some punk busted the turn signals to steal the
bulbs! I found a set of replacement turn signals for sale, and it turns out
the guy also had a really nice Scirocco for sale. It sort of followed me
home. Yes, I have four of them now. It has the original engine, burns oil
from one cylinder, and is much slower than the other three, but its the
nicest of the bunch from a cosmetic perspective, and the one I normally take on
longer journeys, as the stereo, heater, etc. all work quite well.

So, in my life I have owned seven cars and four motorcycles, and still own
and enjoy every one. Yes, admittedly, my garage looks like a vehicular
Jonestown, with half my fleet down for one thing or another (usually quite
serious) at any given time. But I do have ambitions of having everything up
and running again by this time next year, which will be a remarkable thing if
I can pull it off....

Mike

Come on, you know how an engine is a total package. One thing impacts
another.

The CompCams website doesn't say anything about an IR intake.

So, it definitely does not say that a wider lobe separation will smooth out
an engine with Webers, and that's what we were talking about.

Dear Dave,

Considering your story of the engine and rebuild and
considering the volume of schmutz that you describe on your inspections,
my limited *amateur* opinion is that it is OK.

How does the 377 Cleveland run?

Actually Will, those cams you're running have an LSA of 110, which is not
nearly as radical as LSA of 106.
The ICL for them is 106 not the LSA.

[DeTomaso] Wrong cam with Webers....

The chimney was coming at *me* fast! Seriously!

It really was. After Hurricane Fran in 1996 I went outside and saw my
car pummeled with bricks. I thought the frat house next door was
having a go at my car but my roommate pointed up to the next door
neighbor.

I should have sued the pants off of him but.. the car was worth about
$300 bucks and had $3000 woth of body damage. It was academic. I
still raced it until 2001.

1967 Ford Galaxy four door, 390, automatic. Was given mom's old car to drive
in high school (so I could give my younger brother and sister a ride to school).
I would fantasize how I would hop the car up by jacking up the rear end, putting
on crager wheels, putting on a fake hood scoop, and putting those big billboard
decals on the rear quarter panels that said FORD. All I ever got done was
putting on a set of K-Mart hood pins, a Thrush muffler and a steering wheel
cover.

1964 Ford Galaxy 500XL convertible, 352, automatic. This was another mom
hand-me-down the second year of college. My parents moved from Nebraska to
Chicago, so I needed a way to get back and forth from the University of Nebr. I
was hot stuff amongst my dormies having a convertible with bucket seats and a
console. Got a ticket the first week after getting back to school because both
mufflers were rusted out. Loved that car. The truck was big enough to carry
everything I owned (which wasn't much) back and forth from NE to CHI for the two
years I drove the car.

1973 Ford Galaxy four door. This car was a tank. My dad got it from a friend
that used it as a company car, so it had low miles and was a like new car.
This car got me through the rest of my college days.

1978 Datsun 280Z. Right after I got the job offer letter from a company I
applied to during career week my senior year I went out and bought a brand new Z
car. This was 6 weeks before I even graduated. A friend that went to school
with me but quit to join the railroad bought a 1976 Z which he would drive when
he came back for parties and he planted the seed. Drove that car for four
years.

1980 Mazda RX-7. Traded the Z in for this brand new car. After two days, I
went back to the dealer to get my old car back but received the hard lesson on
how much a car depreciates once it leaves the lot. Ended up keeping the car and
came to love it. Joined the SCCA and autocrossed the car for four years. Even
bought an aftermarket back seat (which replaced the storage bins) so I could
take my sons to daycare. Put a fiberglass air dam with driving lights on the
car which made it look cool. BTW it was during a street autocross where Ed Poss
and Bob Woodward brought their Panteras that I decided to start looking to find
a Pantera.

1980 Honda CB750K (still own it). Bought this motorcycle new from the dealer in
82. Shortly after getting the bike I started having kids and the opportunities
to ride were far and few between. Bike just sat in the garage for years and
years. After 17 years, the kids were in high school, and I decided to start
riding it again (it only had 8,000 miles on it). Had the carbs cleaned and it
ran perfect. Other than new tires and batteries, the bike is original and it
only has 15,000 miles on it.

1973 Euro Pantera GTS (still own it). Bought the car from a guy that was
trailing the car to sell but got into an accident. The car wasn't tied down in
the trailer and slid around and bent some sheet metal. Had the car restored and
still enjoying it today. Sold the RX-7 after getting this car.

1980's Olds Cutlass. Bought this as a beater car to get back and forth to work.
Looked like sh*t but was very dependable. Don't think I ever washed it in the
two years I drove it.

1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (still own it). Sold the Olds and bought this Porsche
used after getting a promotion at work (notice I never bought a new vehicle
after I learned my depreciation lesson after buying the Mazda). Fell in love
with this car. Great gas mileage, good power, great handling, comfortable on
long trips, even used the back seat to transport the boys. I ended up getting
the car repainted in the early 2000s and had the motor rebuilt in 2003. Car
looks new and drives perfect.

1996 Ford Ranger pickup (still own it). Inherited this from my stepdad when he
died. Never had a pickup before and now I can't imagine how I'd get along
without one. Truck was beat up enough that you don't care what you throw in
the back or if it gets scratched. Truck has 187K miles and shows no signs of
dying. Always thought I'd look for a econobox when it conks out but not sure
that day will ever come.

1971 Mach 1 Mustang (still own it). This was my last vehicle purchase. Bought
it 5 years ago because I always wanted a Mustang. Wanted a 1970, but the prices
were too high so I settled on a 1971. These cars came out when I was in high
school and I always liked the body style. I've had fun fixing it up and taking
it to car shows. This is the only car I own with an automatic transmission,
which is a nice change of pace from clutching all the time. The mustang shows
up in one of the photos I have on the registry.

I think this is mostly complete. It leaves out 2 Monster Miatas One
that I bought in SanDiego with a 427 Windsor. I welched on the deal
after I found it was 13 to 1 compression and had to have special gas
mixed, also had a second radiator in the trunk. He has since blown the
motor up at least once. The other that I bought in Dothan Alabama with
an LS1 and T56. He sold it out from under me before I could get there
the next day to pick it up. He did send me my PayPal back. Also the
cars that I worked pits on in the 60's. And the outstanding fact that
Graham Hill took me a few laps at the Jarrama circuit in Madrid Spain in
my Lotus, showed me the line and why I should never become a
professional driver.

Gentlemen,

Meet Tony in England (who is not on this forum); he is restoring an early
Pantera and needs a set of L-model 8-inch Campagnolo wheels to match his
10-inch wheels he already has. The L-model wheels differ from the Pre-L wheels

in that they have a flat, machined finish to the 'pentagon' in the center,
whereas the early wheels have a rounded, soft, as-cast finish.

If you have a pair of later-style 8-inch wheels cluttering up your garage,
please 'reply all' and let us know.

Thanks!

Mike
