[DeTomaso] really dumb question about oil

So we had a problem with a local GTS that smoked a lot of blue out the
exhaust. He had a stock pan on the 351C. He thought he had a 10 qt.
pan because it always took about 8 quarts to reach the dipstick.

I came over, inspected the pan and found it was a stock pan. We
drained the oil. After letting it sit for a long period draining, we
put the plug back in and filled.

We initially put 5 quarts in. Started the car, let it warm up and
stopped. We then added another half quart.

We then cut the dipstick tube until the mark on the dipstick showed
the proper oil level.

The fact was, in this case, the owner purchased a new tube from a
vendor and didn't pay attention to the instruction that the tube may
have to be shortened. Once we did that procedure, the engine stopped
smoking, and the tires started. He was a very happy camper.

In your case Chris, might I postulate that if you have stock pan and
at six quarts your dipstick is showing way overfull, that your tube
has been shortened too much. The proper oil level should be in the
hash mark area near the full mark. If it's -way- over that at six
quarts, you may need a new tube, or you may need to shorten you
dipstick.

If you have 10 qt pan or some other non-stock pan.... all bets are off.
