[DeTomaso] really dumb question about oil

That's exactly it--I have a 10-quart Armondo pan, which makes things a bit difficult.
I know my persistent oil-burning problem wasn't due to overfill, because it was limited to only one side, and specifically, one cylinder.  Now that my mechanic fixed the awful gasket, the car seems to run smoke-free!
