The engine is out. The gas tank is out. The rollover valve went
bye-bye. The
welder said hello, and now the 1" hole is gone.
The next time I do an expansion valve, I'll hook it to the highest
point - like
the filler tube.
>>>DO NOT put the tank back in the car without a proper vent of some
sort installed somewhere. There really was no need to weld up the
hole--it's not difficult to install a vent in the stock location and
get it to seal. That said, it makes more sense to put it right on the
top of the tank, next to the fuel filler.
If you don't vent the tank, you run the very real risk of the tank
rupturing due to heat expansion, assuming your gas cap seals properly.
The engine heat is easily enough to heat up the air and fuel inside the
tank, and it desperately needs to go somewhere.
I had a non-sealing gas cap on my non-vented Cobra replica, and the
first weekend I bought it, I parked it in the sun for a few hours.
When I came back to it, the sun had heated the air inside the tank,
which expanded and forced the fuel up and out the filler neck, which
then went into the gas tank, soaking all my clothes and destroyng a
camera.
In a Pantera, the same thing would result in gas flowing out the fuel
filler and pouring onto the exhaust!
Vent it, either with the stock setup, or a rollover valve, or
*something*.
