I used Picklex 20: http://www.picklex20.com/ Someone recommended it and it does seems to do a great job of protecting metal. You are suppose to be able to paint over it, and weld through it, but I'm not to that point yet. I applied it to a media blasted body stored near the ocean, and there was no rust over a couple years.
