Mike said his car was missing the surrounding metal plate too. I'm saying
that I suspect NO pre-L had the surrounding plate and that your 1973 L may
never have had one either. I'm thinking it was only on later Ford program
Pantera L production. Does your car have the plate with the "Body Service
Number in the engine compartment?

Are you referring to the photo -I- linked to which is of -my- car with
no plate and a 1973 L model?  Asa, not Mike.
