Neither of my doors lock with the key either, a legacy of multiple door
handle replacements. Item number 754 on my list of things to do is to pull
both door handles and take them to a locksmith and have them re-keyed. But
in the meantime I just don't worry about it. The car will be perfectly safe
in the secured hotel parking lot.

As to specific advice for repairing your car, all I can say is that you'll
have to fool around with it to determine what the problem is. Try latching
the door with the door open (manually turn the gizmo on the back of the
door that engages the catch on the body, simulating that the door is closed)
and then wiggle it around, and eyeball the situation. It could be out of
adjustment, such that when the door is actually closed on the car, the gizmo
isn't rotating far enough and the lock mechanism thinks the door is still
open. If you can easily lock the car by rotating the gizmo with the door open
and then pushing down on the button, that would be my guess.
