Jack-- presumably this is the result of the different effective lever arm lengths resulting from the different radii of the tires?

Sure enough the problem was caused by the mismatched rear tires. I switched the
rears from right to left and the symptoms were the opposite. The circumference
only differed by about 7/16". I had never experienced this before, would the
same thing happen on a vehicle with a live rear axle? Thanks to all who
responded.

The new tire is a different brand with more tread than the other, so they
may very well have a different circumference.
Oh, that makes it easy to sort out. You have mismatched tires on the rear of
the car??????
You can't buy *one* new rear tire. Or else you wind up suffering symptoms
like, well....like you're suffering now! Even if was the same brand/size/model
of tire, it's likely that you would have had problems unless the 'old' tire was
almost new. But given that you've got a totally different brand/model
(hopefully not size???) tire, well....duh. :>)
The good news is, you should easily be able to buy a second tire to match the
one you fitted on the way to Reno and have no problems, since that tire
*probably* won't have worn enough to make a difference.
