A second common timing problem is the outer ring of 37-year-old balancers
spinning toward the 'retard' side. Trying to reset timing if this has happened
will not work; what would be needed is to find true Top Dead Center relative to
#1 piston. Then, ignition timing can be set correctly.
A third common problem related to timing is a badly worn timing chain jumping
a few teeth on the cam sprocket. This also tends to go toward 'Retard'.
A fourth is a partially or completely sheared spring-pin holding the
distributor drive gear in place. This happens to stock AND aftermarket distributors.
But before tearing the motor apart, I'd try borrowing a 'known-good' 4bbl
carb of any size and mounting it on the troublesome engine. If it still 'chugs',
the problem is obviously NOT the carb. Alternatively, take your carb to a
friend's house and put it on his Mustang/big-block Chev/anything it fits. If it
'chugs' on a different engine , it is something in the carb. If not, its
'somewhere' in all those other suggestions you've received. And guaranteed, it'll be
something simple. Good luck- J Deryke
