[DeTomaso] fuel gauge

It would appear that the sender now offered 'new' (which I believe is sourced from an
Alfa) has a number of issues. Sometimes it works fine, but I've heard of a LOT of
problems posted here, the PI board, and elsewhere. Historically the prices some time
ago for a "real" deTomaso sender were rather "high", and then the factory source dried
up completely. So it comes as no surprise that the vendors have found a new source
(and I watched the prices fall by more than 50%). I suspect the replacement is not
quite 100% compatible, even when I consider that it just can't be that complicated.

My first suggestion would be to borrow an original sender and try that.

There was a good used sender offered on eBay a while back, and it went for about what
the vendors now charge for a "new" one.

I had one I sold for a similar price within the last 6-9 months and the buyer had NO
issues. The scaling was correct, the light worked when it should, etc... I even
helped him install it (for free naturally). So an accurate fuel gauge/sender is not
the holy grail. People "change" to after-market gauges all the time, and I would
suspect these original senders are available. I suggest seeking one.

I am asking pretty much the same question.
Many years ago I replaced the fuel tank (with a Hall unit) in my 72 Pre-L.
Since then it registers full and comes down very quickly. The red light in
the gauge is also coming on early in many cases and it reads close to empty
even though there is almost a half tank left.
I changed the sender this year with a new one from Wilkinson and have the
same results. Mr. Wilkinson said that the float was hung up on a baffle and
needed to be "rotated." Well I had someone try that in his shop and he could
not find a different reading.

Any thoughts out there. Originally the gauge was very good with reliable
readings.
