Subject: Shifter rattle / Dick Ruzzin

I am starting to think that it might be one of the idler pulleys in the
front
belt system although I checked them and found no play of any kind.
It sounds like it is directly behind the firewall.
I suppose it could be the timing chain or harmonic balancer, the water pump
is relatively new.

It is disturbing not to be able to figure it out. I would appreciate any
ideas.

On my Pantera, the SS coolant line to the water pump runs under the floor
and when
it passes thru the firewall, it makes a hard bend to the driver's side
and passes just above the frame rail and wraps around the shift linkage
before connecting to the water pump. The clearance around the linkage
is very tight. I've wondered if the engine could move enough during hard
acceleration to have the water line contact either the frame or linkage.
Just a

 thought.
