[DeTomaso] MSD timing

Hi Forest

I have applied this timing set up to every Cleveland engine combo I have owned since 1982. I original learned it from the book "Ford Performance" by Pat Ghanal where it is recommended. Only one engine couldn't take it and that motor was built for race gas and I was trying to run it on Premium. I believe that motor ended up at 10 / 32

Numerous dyno runs where we adjusted total Advance has confirmed that with the stock iron heads, whether open or closed chamber, the engine prefers more advance and 38 appears a safe limit.

Dynos generally aren't adjusted to capture the off idle experience. My experience in this RPM band is subjective. As the advance is increased from 10 to 16 BTDC, the engine has better off idle response, no hesitation when the throttle is slammed open. I like to say it is crisper -although I appreciate the challenge relating to that term. Share what you learn

JT

  John,

I remember your settings - but I don't remember your build. As I recall, you had a fairly aggressive build on your motor. What was it - I know on my Pantera with a blue printed balanced motor, quench heads and a sissy cam I could not get 16 degrees initial advance but did dial in the 36 degrees total at 3,000.

I never had pre-detonation but the car would not idle worth crap with that much initial advance.

Mark and I will probably set his advance curve today... Thanks, Forest Majors. Still in Hadlyme

    16 BTDC initial, 38 total, all in at 2800 - 3000 RPM.

If you have detonation, reduce total to 36

    YMMV
