The 'expansion tank' is the bigger of the two and does NOT need a pressure
cap since all it does is catch the overflow. The shorter one is the so-called
'swirl tank' and does need a real pressure cap. Its been found that Euro caps
are a little longer than U.S caps, and the base of the stock swirl tank neck is
often rough, making a good seal with an older rubber washer in a cap
difficult. Many owners take the swirl tank to a rad shop and have the Euro neck
desoldered and a std US neck reattached, making sure the bottom is smooth where the
cap touches. This fixes both problems.
Note that sometime in '72, both the swirl tank and the expansion tank were
nickel plated inside and out under that flat black spray paint, which usually
keeps the mild steel tank from rusting quite as badly when owners don't change
coolant each year. Cheers- J Deryke
