Actually, the easiest/best thing to do is gently crack the brake bleeder on 
the caliper in question before compressing the pistons.   That allows excess 
fluid to spooge directly from the caliper, rather than flowing all the way back 
through the brake system and flooding out the top of the master cylinder 
reservoir (or alternately, extending the pistons from the removed caliper hanging 
on the other side of the car!).
