[DeTomaso] Brake Caliper Question

How are you testing the piston movement?

If you use a large clamp and slowly turning, the piston should "eventually"
move all the way into the caliper. All the way means flush with the ring,
and maybe a little more. Slowly means it may take several minutes. A
little turn on the clamp at a time.

But the hydraulics will resist movement. And as the fluid backs up the pipe
back into the master, the fluid may also possibly overflow the master
cylinder reservoir (making a mess).

The procedure in the ProvaMo repair manual cautions one to drain some fluid
from the reservoir before compressing the piston fully back into the
caliper.

Extra brake fluid gets there over time, as one checks the level and adds a
little bit. This is necessary to compensate as the brake pads are consumed,
and the piston needs to travel further to maintain contact with the rotor,
so the level in the master drops, and we add a little more.

The pistons in my original brake calipers, when removed from the rotor, but
with hydraulics attached , only move a limited amount. Could anything other
than corrosion in the caliper be limiting their movement ? Any suggestions
for repair. Braking power on the car is not great.

Thanks,

Hap
