Thanks to all who responded for the information.  It sounds as if I'll be OK for now, and although I certainly want to get the heater repaired correctly, trying to repair it is not something I want to try on my own.  Maybe we'll have a tech session sometime where I can enlist some help since I believe I have to remove the entire dash to get to the heater mechanism.

Actually, I guess I could schedule just such a tech session for the Pantera Northwest club, since I was elected vice president and now am in charge of the club's activities for 2008 (I missed the meeting last month and consequently was voted in to office!)  Of course, scheduling such an activity for the club would certainly be construed as a conflict of interest and I wouldn't want to start behaving like a politician just because I hold office!
