I think that LEDs themselves give off virtually no heat, however there
is probably also a resistor in there that may give off some. I've had my
LED setup for over a year & have not noticed any heat problems (but I
wasn't monitoring for this either. Next time I am out at night for an
extended period, I'll do a hand test!)

I don't think there is much airflow through/around our gauges. Also,
there is double the danger with going to higher wattage bulbs: one is
added heat and the second is the higher current draw.

I don't remember the recommended limits, but I'm sure there are many on
the forum who could recommend the maximum safe bulb wattage.
