The routing of the cable is probably the issue.   You probably have a tight 
bend, relatively close to the gauge, and the cable has prematurely died.   If 
you are VERY lucky you can reroute it and save it.

If not, then no.

FWIW on my way to Vegas, my Pantera picked up a little cable noise/needle 
bounce, but some choice words shouted at the car seemed to stop it after about 
ten minutes and it never returned.   So you might want to try that too. :>)
