  Are you sure that first is truely first and not third? That happened to me once. Gary and I didn't have things lined up just right and we couldn't find reverse because the splines on the shifty linkage were slightly off.

FWIW, if you've messed around with the shift gate, that couid cause the 

problem. A new Hall finger-less gate I installed on a car that shifted fine,
caused 

it to not go into reverse. The shifter shaft must lay over to the left in 

order to select reverse and some gate-surrounds, on some cars, block that
action. 

5 minutes of file beveling of the inside edge of the gate allowed easy 

reverse shifts again. Unusual, but it happened- J DeRyke
