Garth,
I haven't followed this thread but your reference to a Mallory Unilite
caught my eye. I had one once and that was too many times. The thing
died in the middle of a busy intersection at rush hour. I never
considered repairing it.

Look at the plug very closely and you might see a pin sticking out the backside. Depending on which electronic module you have, the problem may also be in there- Pertronics are famous for partial failures in which the engine sometimes continues to run- poorly- to confuse trouble-shooters like me.
