[DeTomaso] Daytona Update

Thanks all for the kind words.

We will know more when we tear it apart, but we presently think this has to
do with the setup of the Quaife CWP running on the coast side of the
teeth. Our transaxle guy tightened the tolerance to run on the coast side,
and we added a cooler and fan, but the demands of Daytona combined with a
closer tolerance of the CWP likely just generated so much heat (it was over
320 degrees) that it just quit.

For the shorter HSR sprint races it stayed around 250-260 degrees, but for
the first leg of the 24, which is twice as long as the Sprint races, it
cooked to 290 but lived. Then sitting and heat soaking and cooling for a
few hours, something changed. It was not working within 3 laps of the
second stint.

For now, we will pull the engine/trans and inspect everything. We will
surely need some new internal parts for the trans, but regardless, the
Pantera sits until Quaife makes good on the correct CWP with properly cut
gears. In hindsight, we should have waited for Quaife to deliver the
correct CWP before putting this much stress in it.

There was a lot of carnage this year. We blew up a Panoz motor and cooked
the Quaife, but otherwise both cars performed well with three podiums in
the prelim races and are in one piece, with the Pantera actually still
drivable...could be worse.

properly cut gears.A In hindsight, we should have waited for Quaife to
deliver the correct CWP before putting this much stress in it.A A
There was a lot of carnage this year.A We blew up a Panoz motor and
cooked the Quaife, but otherwise both cars performed well with three
podiums in the prelim races and are in one piece, with the Pantera
   actually still drivable...could be worse.

     Steve,
Sorry to hear that. As I told you when we ran into each other on the
grid I would have been worried a ZF would overheat, but I thought
the Quaife would do better. This place is really hard on diffs, so
any transaxle is going to get hot! I'm surprised the cooler didn't
prevent this. Where is it located? Maybe it's not getting good
     airflow?
     Better luck next year!
