Over the years I have seen far too many postings where suggestion after suggestion pours in to an owner complaining about overheating, but no one has ever established exactly what constitutes the determination of IF the car was actually……..overheating.

You do not need a temperature gauge to make that determination. You just need practical experience.

If you can take a thoroughly warmed car off of a long freeway drive during a hot 80-100 degree day and then get stuck in stop and go traffic for 30 minutes without blowing hose connections, boiling water in the cylinder heads, or expelling scalding steam and water from the overflow tank, then you do not have an overheating problem. 

The first question from any of us trying to help such an owner is, as Will has suggested, having the owner describe exactly the symptoms he observes that has led him to the conclusion his engine is …..overheating.
