Thanks to all the suggestions.
A little update.

As for the cleanliness of the tank. . . I crawled up on the trunk lid and
can easily see the condition of the insides. I was surprised by how CLEAN
it is. I used a pickup magnet and got nothing!
Disconnecting at pump inlet, I get a good stream of fuel. Back blowing
with air did not put any thing into tank and flow was same afterwards

The tank "vent" is part of an evaporative emissions setup that I need to
check farther. (think it might pull a slight vacumn when working proper)
But I can easily reach back and open the fill cap as driving.
The bottom of tank and pump inlet are within an inch of being the same
"head"

I vented the inlet filter as to remove all air. Today was a cool day
(60's) and after 30 minute drive with no problem, when I shut off, I watched
the fuel filter go empty!
The fuel pump is too hot to hold! Lines are cool.
I am assuming the heat is coming from being bolted to the block, so I don't
know if a shield or insulation would help. Maybe adding a "heat sink"?

I am using non ethanol 93 octane, but not sure is winter or summer blend.

While I had a couple vapor lock problems in the YEARS my Wife and I drove
regular, just wonder why is it so bad now?
