In my case it was hardened grease after 30 years. Took it apart, cleaned,
re greased and it is good. Already had brass gears changed by my father in
1992.

A A Are you saying that when you hit the window switch, you can
     hear the
A A motor trying to move the window down but nothing happens when
     you hit
A A the switch to put it up?A Or, is it down and doesn't want to
     come up?
A A Besides the switch, it could be that the original plastic gear
     in your
A A window motor has failed, as in crumbled into little bits, and
     needs to
     A A be replaced.
A A When I looked under the front of Chris' car, my thought was
     some kind
A A of binding in the rack and pinion gears or the turning of the
     steering
A A shaft.A As Chris mentioned, it was quite pronounced when he
     pulled into
A A the garage, but completely gone after we'd swapped out the ZF
     fluid.

A A I warned you that once I got my car back I'd again be

A A Here are the latest two:
A A A 1.A A My passenger window decided it no longer wants to go

A A down position still seems to work.A I'm assuming the switch

     A A A 1.A A After driving about 45 minutes to Mike Thomas' house
     in warm
A A weather the other day for the gear-oil change , as I pulled
     into Mikes'
A A garage the front of the car seemed to be groaning when going

A A bumps, and especially when turning right or left.A Once in the
     garage
A A and stationery, the sound was quite pronounced when I turned
     the wheels
A A left or right.A After the oil was changed, probably an hour or
     so, we
A A jacked up the front of the car and Mike took a look at the

A A for loose bearings, and we again turned the wheels
     lock-to-lock.
A A Nothing seemed wrong, and the noise was gone.A Even after the
     car was
A A back on the ground the noise was no longer there.
A A Yesterday, in 99-degree heat, I drove about an hour, and the
     sound
A A returned.A After letting the car sit for a couple of hours,
     again, no
A A sound.A After driving home again, however, the soundA
     A returned--I
A A became aware of it after I turned off the freeway and began
     turning
