I started typing up a similar response and hadn't gotten around to sending yet.
I have a Millermatic 210 Mig and a Lincoln 175 TIG/stick. The Mig is my go-to for most of the welding jobs I have at the home user level and the staple for any car body work. I find that to remain proficient at TIG it needs to be used regularly, I got it for aluminum welding, but never had time to devote to be able produce those perfect beads you see on all the videos!
I purchased both my welders barely used for less than $1,000 each, people like us with good intentions purchase one and end up infrequently using it. I'd also suggest looking on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
Julian

Hi Ken,
I have a Lincoln PowerMig 216 (250amp peak) and an Everlast 250EX inverter TIG with a torch cooler and upgraded CK brand torch. It used to be that American made big name machines were the only way to go. Things are a bit different now. Many of the Lincoln and Miller machines are made in China and have few features at a home shop price point. The prices can be 3 or 4 times more than the lesser known brands. There are some junk machines, but also some really nice ones that aren't blue or red.
My Everlast seems to be very high quality and was 3 times less than a comparable Miller. That very expensive Miller didn't have IGBT Inverters so the aluminum welding ability isn't as controllable if the parts aren't new and high purity. Had a pro welder use it once and said it was better than his Miller at work for aluminum parts. So far everything still works as new and I have had it for about 2yrs. It may not last as long as the Miller, but at 3 times the price you could buy another if it failed someday.
Also, If you are just using it for a home shop, you could look at used machines. I've seen good deals on smaller lightly used machines on FB market place.
Regards,
George

Looking at welders, a client recommended a Miller 220, but they are $4K. Anyone know if Eastwood welders are any good:

this seems to have a lot of the features of the Miller, less than half the price. The client said the Miller 220 does a lot for you to get a good weld:
