Ken,

Yes, they are special.  They have a non-standard (reduced) head diameter.
I remember buying Stainless Steel ones with the correct head bevel angle and then turning the heads down to get them right size.  
Then I polished the heads and they ended up looking better than the original screws.

Are these just a flat head screw.  Look to be M8, McMaster has them with 90 and 100 deg tapers, but the heads on both are 16mm diameter and I think this it too large to fit into the recess in the latch? 

Are these special "Italian" screw sizes?
