[DeTomaso] #94 McDonald's NASCAR auction ends today and "thanks"for the support last weekend

You guys who have actually built a 351-C or two know there are two problem here, First of all, aftermarket distributor gears are NOT brass (which is copper alloyed with zinc) but bronze (copper alloyed with tin). Bronze is harder than brass but softer than stock chilled cast iron or steel. When used in a distributor drive to power an oil pump, bronze is a short term solution. I believe most were/are used by drag racers or street engine builders as a quick fix for the 50-yr-old shortage of steel drive gears used with steel cams in out-of-production Cleveland engines.
Bronze is cheap and easy to cast and cut into gears- both on 351-C & the 429-460 big- blocks (same gear). Knowledgable Ford engine builders say a bronze gear will begin wearing instantly and it's functional life depends on the rpms the engine experiences and the type of oil pump it's driving. To a lesser degree, the kind & grade of oil used. At most in round numbers, 5000 easy miles before performance drops notably; at worst, one (1.0) middling-long competition event. YMMV....
Second, a standard 351-C oil pump off a stock engine is much bigger & more capable of supplying oil than a small block pump for hipo-289s, Boss 302s, or even LeMans-capable 427 FEs in a GT-40. It is truly a racing class pump. High pressure or high volume pumps are utter overkill. Not for gear wear but on the gear PIN, since the loads on it will be much, much higher even discounting the debris-in-oil argument. The wrong pin is often delivered even in high-buck aftermarket dizzys.
The Ford pin is two sizes smaller than a GM pin, and is often made of a coil of spring steel, which has no impact resistance at all. They fail progressively in layers from debris impacts or from repeated jumping on the throttle. And spring-steel chips in the oil are really bad news!  For 351-Cs, I recommend either a double-thickness set of 2 split pins, two split-pins in separate holes or a single solid dowel pin or staked piece of drill rod. NEVER a spring-pin.
As for engine damage, a gearotor oil pump is far better at providing oil to a performance engine than a two-gear pump such as GM used. But as Dan said, the gearotor due to its very tight tolerances is notoriously intolerant of any sizable particle contaminates. Even flakes of rubber (from stock valve seals) above a certain size will momentarily jam up the gearotor. A GOOD filter and frequent oil changes fixes this. And, a hardened steel driveshaft is std fare in performance Fords and trucks. Stockers  are seemingly made of recycled coathangers.
Bronze gear-tooth wear particles in oil that successfully pass first thru a stock oil pump's primary screen, then thru a gearotor pump into engine bearings, will necessarily be pretty small. And tiny flakes of bronze, being a decent plain bearing material itself, is unlikely to cause much damage to main or rod journals but will imbed into bearings. No guarantees, though: debris in oil is still debris and bearings- even racing tri-metal bearings- are far softer than any other material involved.
Note- every bit of the above post goes all the way back to NASCAR's use of the 351-C in the mid-'70s and has been endlessly published (and debated) by numerous real authorities.

I thought at one-point composite gears were the next big thing? FWIW
here's Summit Racing's 'what gear should I use' tech advice and bronze
only recommended for billet steel roller cam.

[2]Which distributor gear should I buy? - Summit Racing Equipment
Getting the right material is the most important part of choosing a
distributor gear. The gear should be slightly softer than the camshaft.
This will ensure accurate ignition timing and a long engine life.

I was originally told 10,000 miles but when I changed mine at 8000
miles it was worn and feathered more than I would have liked to have
seen, so that why I now say 5000 miles instead of the original 10,000
miles. You should follow the cam manufactures recommendations on which
type of gear to run for each manufactures cam. Brass is safe to run in
most all cases, but may not give much longevity, but it wont harm the
  cam drive.

but significant degradation would happen much sooner.
Iron cams need iron gears and steel roller cams need steel gears.
Brass gears are a relic of the past....

-------------- next part --------------
You guys who have actually built a 351-C or two know there are two
problem here, First of all, aftermarket distributor gears are NOT brass
(which is copper alloyed with zinc) but bronze (copper alloyed with
tin). Bronze is harder than brass but softer than stock chilled cast
iron or steel. When used in a distributor drive to power an oil pump,
bronze is a short term solution. I believe most were/are used by drag
racers or street engine builders as a quick fix for the 50-yr-old
shortage of steel drive gears used with steel cams in out-of-production
   Cleveland engines.
Bronze is cheap and easy to cast and cut into gears- both on 351-C &
the 429-460 big- blocks (same gear). Knowledgable Ford engine builders
say a bronze gear will begin wearing instantly and it's functional life
depends on the rpms the engine experiences and the type of oil pump
it's driving. To a lesser degree, the kind & grade of oil used. At most
in round numbers, 5000 easy miles before performance drops notably; at
worst, one (1.0) middling-long competition event. YMMV....
Second, a standard 351-C oil pump off a stock engine is much bigger &
more capable of supplying oil than a small block pump for hipo-289s,
   Boss 302s, or even LeMans-capable 427 FEs in a GT-40. It is truly a
racing class pump. High pressure or high volume pumps are utter
overkill. Not for gear wear but on the gear PIN, since the loads on it
will be much, much higher even discounting the debris-in-oil argument.
The wrong pin is often delivered even in high-buck aftermarket dizzys.
The Ford pin is two sizes smaller than a GM pin, and is often made of a
coil of spring steel, which has no impact resistance at all. They fail
progressively in layers from debris impacts or from repeated jumping on
the throttle. And spring-steel chips in the oil are really bad news!
   For 351-Cs, I recommend either a double-thickness set of 2 split pins,
two split-pins in separate holes or a single solid dowel pin or staked
piece of drill rod. NEVER a spring-pin.
As for engine damage, a gearotor oil pump is far better at providing
oil to a performance engine than a two-gear pump such as GM used. But
as Dan said, the gearotor due to its very tight tolerances is
notoriously intolerant of any sizable particle contaminates. Even
flakes of rubber (from stock valve seals) above a certain size will
momentarily jam up the gearotor. A GOOD filter and frequent oil changes
fixes this. And, a hardened steel driveshaft is std fare in performance
Fords and trucks. Stockers are seemingly made of recycled coathangers.
Bronze gear-tooth wear particles in oil that successfully pass first
thru a stock oil pump's primary screen, then thru a gearotor pump into
engine bearings, will necessarily be pretty small. And tiny flakes of
bronze, being a decent plain bearing material itself, is unlikely to
cause much damage to main or rod journals but will imbed into bearings.
No guarantees, though: debris in oil is still debris and bearings- even
racing tri-metal bearings- are far softer than any other material
   involved.
Note- every bit of the above post goes all the way back to NASCAR's use
of the 351-C in the mid-'70s and has been endlessly published (and
   debated) by numerous real authorities.

I thought at one-point composite gears were the next big thing? FWIW
here's Summit Racing's 'what gear should I use' tech advice and
   bronze
only recommended for billet steel roller cam.

Getting the right material is the most important part of choosing a
distributor gear. The gear should be slightly softer than the
   camshaft.
This will ensure accurate ignition timing and a long engine life.

I was originally told 10,000 miles but when I changed mine at 8000
miles it was worn and feathered more than I would have liked to have
seen, so that why I now say 5000 miles instead of the original 10,000
miles. You should follow the cam manufactures recommendations on
   which
type of gear to run for each manufactures cam. Brass is safe to run
   in
most all cases, but may not give much longevity, but it wont harm the
     cam drive.

Iron cams need iron gears and steel roller cams need steel gears.
Brass gears are a relic of the past....

   like
a licorice stick. That's the usual cause.

cause; I'm asking IF it could be a potential cause to those who know
more than I about such things (which is an awful lot of people!)
