[DeTomaso] Ooops - What Have I Done to Myself??

Yikes!
That location is open to the front of the engine and the sump.  Depending on what fell in, it could land on the timing gear set and ruin you day quick by lodging between the chain and a gear before maybe dropping into the pan.

Get a bore scope and look around in there through the dizzy hole.

Are sure it was a sound of something dropping into the block and not something in or on the distributor?
