 I have a vague recollection about a smaller roll pin inside the standard roll pin?

    You may need to pull the distributor.  A common problem used to be the shear pin breaking on the gear to shaft connection.  It would usually twist just enough to throw timing off and cause poor running.  My money is on that, based on your description.

    It doesn’t happen often anymore but is more likely on high horsepower engines.
