[DeTomaso] Caliper color

When I split my calipers I found what appeared to be silver cadmium plating
between the 2 halves. I say cad. because Zinc plating usually has more
shine.

Do not use Eastwood's silver caliper paint, as I did, to try a replicate the
original look. A nice and sturdy paint but has too much black in it to be
really silver. Tends to look more like a shinny grey.

On another car since then, I have had them zinc plated and it is closer to
the cad plating.

My '72 had 4 silver calipers back in early '80. And cold-bloodedly, the
issue with cadmium affected the mfg due to workers inhaling hot fumes from
the electroplatng tanks, not the users. Finished assemblies are safe to
handle unless they were used with asbestos pads and are dusty. There's a
spray-can application that adds 'cold galvanize' which is the same zinc
finish but not electroplated, and protects the iron surface the same way.

A little digging around the web indicates Girling used "Silver Cadmium"
electroplating on calipers during this era.  This has been changed to "Clear
Zink" electroplating which is actually silver in color.  This change was due
to environmental issues with the Cadmium.

I sure one of the scientists on this list can provide a better description
of the processes and differences.

Here's an interesting article on caliper plating by Raybestos
