[DeTomaso] engine mounts, engine moved forward or rearward?

Here’s a pic. My car is at my brother’s house getting a paint refresh, so I asked him to take a quick photo.
You can’t tell from this, but the mount is also about ½” lower – by slotting the mounting holes. That’s as far as you can drop it before it bottoms out.
If you look closely and compare with your ZF mounts, you’ll see that my mount is thinner fore/aft. I figured there was plenty of meat on the factory mounts to remove a bit.
I have 180-degree headers, so exhaust issues weren’t a consideration. I dropped the engine before I built the headers. I would hope that ½” down and ½” back wouldn’t cause too many issues with a stock exhaust, though.
No issues with the stock rear mounted a/c condenser either – since it isn’t there.
Almost forgot – there were some clearance issues with the spreader bar. The stock bar wouldn’t be a problem, but the Hall piece I have is the square tubular design that goes straight across. When I went to reinstall the spreader bar with the engine in place, the clutch slave hit the spreader bar. It wasn’t very bad, so I notched the spreader bar.

Good idea!
I moved mine down and back - maybe 1/2" each direction.
I didn't bend the ZF frame mounts. I cut 1/2" off the mount - the aluminum part. It's a super thick mount. It doesn't need to be 2.5" thick.

Note- all of these mods are for later 2-point ZF mouns. I don't think
the early single-point ZF mount can be so easily modified. If you want
to shift the whole powertrain backwards just a little, you can redrill
the lower motor mounts towards the back. Doing this up to about 1-1/4"
will not require modifying anything else including the exhaust. You
will have to adjust the shifter down on its support near the left motor
mount, and on some cars, the upper bay brace bar gets close to the
external slave cylinder bracket. Our late '72 L mounts were drilled
with two different patterns so its mounts were not specfic side to side
like earlier ones.
For both of these mods, you must bend the ZF rear frame tabs backward
into shallow S shapes and remove all the rearmost transaxle shims. This
may reslant the carb so pay attention to your float heights. You'll be
shocked at how easily those frame tabs bend. Water pump pliers and a
small hammer are all you need. 3/4" is enough to allow big cap
distributors to easily clear a stock firewall. To accommodate big-block
engines, Bob Byars used to slide the powertrain about 4" backwards,
which caused the ZF to touch the A/C shroud & need a dent. That much
movement caused lots of other little clearance mods & required new
motor mounts. There are over a dozen such Panteras- Forest Goodheart
has one.

I know this has been asked before, but is the mount location support
to
move the motor forward or rearward?
Thanks,
Ken
